Scottish ladies on Vancouver Island

A colourized multi-generational photo from my family history collection.

As I coloured this photo of my Scottish ancestors, I tried to put myself in the shoes of my great-grandmother Christine (the youngest).

When this photo was taken in the early 1900s, Christine and her husband Arthur had recently purchased property on Finnerty Bay (close to Cadboro Bay), on Vancouver Island.

Her grandmother Ann and her mother Sarah were living in Manitoba. To have joined Christine for a holiday in B.C., they would have travelled on the Canadian Pacific Railway.

At the time, bathing in the sea would have seemed quite a novelty! Especially in bathing costumes that showed off bare skin.
